Cinco de Mayo Part III – Activities, Decor & the Essential Libation {Margarita}

Sooo, the key is to give the kids something fun to do.  I couldn't resist picking up a little burro pinata.  Pinatas are fun for adults and kids alike.  I also grabbed a box of plain maracas so that the kids could paint and decorate their own set to take home.

I've found so many cute decorating ideas online but Hank & Hunt has my two absolute favorites--DIY tissue paper banners and these adorable little fringed glass jar vases for simple and super cute carnation centerpieces.  Both of these darling ideas can be put together quickly and with no fuss.

Don't have time for DIY--just string up some crepe paper streamers in bright, bold colors.  A Cinco de Mayo party doesn't have to be fancy to be awesome.  All you really need is delicious food, thirst-quenching cocktails and some fabulous music!

Music recommendations (available on Itunes):
Gipsy Kings
Buena Vista Social Club
Los Lobos
Mariachi Cobre

I hope everyone has a safe and fun Cinco de Mayo {or Cinco de Drinko}!!

My Favorite Margarita

I bartended for a bit during college and picked up a little basic cocktail knowledge on the way.  The best advice I ever got was from a customer I was waiting on who asked me to make her margarita using 1/3 beer, 1/3 sweet and sour, 1/3 tequila and a big squeeze of fresh lime juice.  She assured me that there was no better margarita recipe and after my shift that night we put her margarita to the test.  She was right.  And our restaurant started serving her version the next day.  To this day, I won't serve one to my {always skeptical} guests any other way.... the look of surprise and absolute approval on their faces always gives me the ultimate satisfaction!

2 oz tequila
2 oz sweet and sour
2 oz Mexican beer
Lime wedge

Shake tequila, sweet and sour and mexican beer in a cocktail shaker {or just mix well in your glass}.  Salt the rim of your glass, if desired.  Fill glass with ice, pour in your delicious concoction, give it a squeeze of lime and drop it into your glass.  Salud!
